A Quick Look at Competitive Balance in MLB
Last week, FiveThirtyEight posted an article in which the authors, Rob Arthur and Neil Paine tackled several questions about some recent trends in Major League Baseball, including "Is MLB’s era of parity over?" They found increases in both the standard deviation of wins across the league and the correlation between payroll and wins, suggesting a possible end to the era of increasing parity that the league had been experiencing for some time.
The article reminded me of some similar research I did for a grad school course last year. It was a data visualization course, so the graphics were meant to stand on their own without any explanation. Keeping that in mind, I'll let the pictures tell the rest of the story.
